Fired On Gold Instructions

  • 1) Fire greenware to cone 03.
  • 2) Apply two coats of CG Clear Glaze to areas where gold will be.  Fire to cone 05.
  • 3) Apply one even coat of Liquid Bright Gold to clear glazed area.  Fire to cone 018.
  • DH2309  Driftwood Perching Dragon

Materials and Colors Needed:  DH01 Daffodil, DH03 True Orange, DH08 Black, DH09 Real Brown, DH12 Leather Brown, DH21 Sand, DH22 Christmas Red, DH23 Bone, DH25 Toast, DH30 Country Blue, DH37 Cream, SP08 Matte Spray, DHB6 - #12 shader, DHB3 - #3 round detail brush, DHB1 - #10/0  liner, DHB2 - #1 round detail, DHB7 - 3/4" shader

  • Step 1:  Basecoat entire piece Black.
  • Step 2:  Wetbrush all wood areas with Real Brown.  With color still in your brush, add Toast and wetbrush wood again.  (Avoid two stumps).  With color still in your brush, add a small amount of Country Blue and wetbrush highlights on edges of wood.  With color still in your brush, add a small amount of Cream and lightly highlight wood again.
  • Step 3:  Wetbrush two stumps with Sand..  Tint near base of stumps with washes of Toast, Real Brown and Leather Brown.  Wetbrush edges with Cream.
  • Step 4:  Wetbrush dragon with Leather Brown.
  • Step 5:  Wetbrush all of dragon except belly, with Christmas Red.  With color still in your brush, add True Orange and wetbrush highlights on body and face and edges of wings.  Add Daffodil to same brush and highlight wing edges and around face again.  Wetbrush belly with True Orange.  Shade dragon with a Cranberry wash.
  • Step 6:  Paint teeth, toenails, talons, and horns along back with Bone.  Shade near the base of these areas with a Toast wash.  Paint eyes Bone.  Paint eyes again with Daffodil; shade them with a True Orange wash; paint pupils Black.
  • Step 7:  Lightly tint some of the wood with washes of Leather Brown, True Orange, and Christmas Red.
  • Step 8:  Paint spots along neckline and back bone ridge True Orange.
  • Step 9:  Shade entire piece, as necessary, with a Black wash.  Use a liner brush with Black to detail around teeth, eyes and ridges on belly.
  • Step 10:  Spray piece with Matte Spray Sealer.

DH2310  Driftwood Flying Dragon Materials and Colors Needed:  DH03 True Orange, DH08 Black, DH09 Real Brown, DH25 Toast, DH37 Cream, DH43 Teal, DH46 Fog, DH52 Cranberry, SP07 Krackle-It, SP12 Pearl-It, various brushes

  • Step 1:  Basecoat entire piece Black.
  • Step 2:  Apply one coat Krackle-It on belly and let dry.
  • Step 3:  Apply one coat Fog over Krackle-It.  Allow to crackle and dry thoroughly.
  • Step 4:  Wetbrush all remaining areas of piece with Fog.
  • Step 5:  Tint the wood and dragon using washes of Toast, Leather Brown, and Teal.
  • Step 6:  Wetbrush wood and dragon lightly with Blue Suede (use it sparingly, only as an accent color).
  • Step 7:  Wetbrush highlights on the wood and dragon with Cream.
  • Step 8:  Paint eyes True Orange, shaded with Cranberry with Black pupils.  Paint scales on face and along neck with "pearlized" Black.
  • Step 9:  Shade entire piece, as necessary with a Black wash (corner-loaded into your ½" shader brush).
  • Step 10:  Spray with Matte Spray Sealer.

DH2312  Driftwood Dragon on Castle Materials and Colors Needed:  DH08 Black, DH09 Real Brown, DH12 Leather Brown, DH15 Mystic Purple, DH19 Light Grey, DH22 Christmas Red, DH23 Bone, DH25 Toast, DH29 White, DH40 Turquoise, DH49 Premier Gold, DH52 Cranberry, FT04 Burnished Gold Fingertip, SP02 Mask-It, SP07 Krackle-It, SP08 Matte Spray, DHB6 - #12  shader, DHB3 - #3  round detail, DHB1 - #10/0 liner, DHB7 - 3/4" shader, DHB2 - #1 round detail brush

  • Step 1:  Basecoat entire piece Black.
  • Step 2:  Apply one coat Krackle-It on dragon's belly.  Let dry.
  • Step 3:  Apply one heavy coat Mystic Purple over Krackle-It.  Corner-load DHB6 shader with Cranberry and float color along side and between sections of belly.  Repeat above, using Black.  Float White on edges of ridges on belly.
  • Step 4:  Wetbrush all remaining areas with Real Brown.  With color still in your brush, add Toast and wetbrush all wood again.  With color still in your brush, add increasing amounts of Bone and wetbrush highlights on wood and cut-off sections of wood.  Shade and tint the wood with washes of Turquoise, Mystic Purple, Cranberry and Black.
  • Step 5:  Wetbrush stones on castle ledge and around windows Light Grey.  Tint them with washes of Mystic Purple and Turquoise.
  • Step 6:  Wetbrush castle with Leather Brown.  Wetbrush again lightly with Christmas Red, then Mystic Purple on the edges.  Lightly tint some of the bricks with a Cranberry wash.
  • Step 7:  Wetbrush dragon with Mystic Purple.  With color still in your brush, add increasing amounts of Turquoise and wetbrush highlights on dragon.  The wing edges should be almost pure Turquoise.  Tint the dragon's body and wings with a Cranberry wash in the deeper areas.
  • Step  8:  Paint tongue Cranberry.  Paint teeth Bone.  Paint toenails Premier Gold.  Paint eye Turquoise, shade with Midnight Blue, with a Black pupil.
  • Step 9:  Shade the piece as necessary with a Black wash to define detail.
  • Step 10:  Apply  Fingertip Burnished Gold on castle roof.
  • Step 11:  Apply Mask-It over fired gold areas.
  • Step 12:  Spray with Matte Spray Sealer.  Remove Mask-It.

DH2317  Oil Lamp Materials and Colors Needed:  DHB13 - small fan brush, Earthtone Glazes : ET01 Black Forest, ET24 Dark Canyon

  • Step 1:  Using DHB13 fan brush, apply one coat ET01 Black Forest on top surface of lamp and knob.  Dab the glaze on, leaving bare areas of bisque - the ET01 will run when fired, creating drips and spots.
  • Step 2:  Apply three coats ET24 Dark Canyon on entire piece (2 coats only on bottom).
  • Step 3:  Roll inside of lamp and knob with ET01 Black Forest.
  • Step 4:  Fire to cone 05.

DH2318  Gargoyle Smoker Materials and Colors Needed:  Various brushes, FT04 Fingertip Copper, SP08 Matte Spray, DH08 Black, DH09 Real Brown

  • Step 1:  Clean greenware and fire to cone 03.
  • Step 2:  Basecoat piece with Black.  Wetbrush with Real Brown.  Apply fingertip Copper  lightly to highlight.  Spray with Matte Spray.

DH2323  Gargoyle with Skull Materials and Colors Needed:  DH08 Black, DH10 Mustard, DH12 Leather Brown, DH22 Christmas Red, DH23 Bone, DH25 Toast, DH30 Country Blue, DH37 Cream, DH38 Grass Green, DH45 Shadow Green, SP02 Mask-It, SP07 Krackle-It, SP08 Matte Spray, FT03 Fingertip Green Mist

  • Step 1:  Basecoat entire piece Black.
  • Step 2:  Apply one coat Krackle-It on skull.  Let dry.
  • Step 3:  Apply one heavy coat Bone over Krackle-It.  Let dry.  Lightly tint skull with a thin wash of Toast.  Highlight edges with Cream.
  • Step 4:  Wetbrush rocks with Light Grey.  Shade and tint the rock with washes of Toast, Leather Brown and Country Blue.  Lightly wetbrush rocks with Cream.
  • Step 5:  Wetbrush dragon (except beak) with Grass Green.  With color still in your brush add increasing amounts of Mustard and wetbrush highlights on dragon's body.  Shade deepest areas of body with a wash of Shadow Green.
  • Step 6:  Wetbrush beak with Mustard.  Tint beak lightly with a Toast wash.
  • Step 7:  Paint markings on feet and gums and tongue Christmas Red.
  • Step 8:  Shade piece with a Black wash.
  • Step 9:  Apply Finger-tip Green Mist on wings.
  • Step 10:  Apply Mask-it over fired gold.  Let dry.
  • Step 11:  Spray piece with Matte Spray.  Remove Mask-it.

DH2324  Firekeeper Lion Materials and Colors Needed:  Various brushes, SP08 Matte Spray, tea light candle, DH16 Flaxon Yellow, DH10 Mustard, DH12 Leather Brown, DH25 Toast, DH09 Real Brown, DH37 Cream, DH08 Black, AT04 Red Brown Antiquing, small piece of red clear plastic for eyes

  • Step 1:  Clean greenware carefully and cut eyes out, fire to cone 03.  Basecoat entire piece Flaxon Yellow and antique with AT04 Red Brown.  Wipe back with soft cloth.
  • Step 2:  Apply a wash of Mustard to body of lion.  Highlight body and mane lightly with Flaxon Yellow.
  • Step 3:  Shade mane with washes of Toast, Leather Brown and Real Brown to define.  Highlight around eyes, muzzle and feet with Cream.  Shade body and end of tail with Real Brown.  Paint nose and mouth Black.  Shade between toes with Black.
  • Step 4:  Wetbrush wings Cream and shade with Toast.  Spray with Matte Spray.  Tape red plastic behind eyes.

DH2325  Cat Firekeeper Materials and Colors Needed:  DH08 Black, DH09 Real Brown, DH10 Mustard, DH12 Leather Brown, DH16 Flaxon Yellow, DH19 Light Grey, DH22 Christmas Red, DH23 Bone, DH25 Toast, DH40 Turquoise, SP02 Mask-it, SP08 Matte Spray, small piece of red clear plastic for eyes

  • Step 1:  Basecoat entire piece (except face of shield) Black.
  • Step 2:  Wetbrush rocks Light Grey.  Shade and tint them with washes of Toast, Leather Brown, Turquoise and Black.  Wetbrush edges of rocks lightly with Cream.
  • Step 3:  Wetbrush cat with Real Brown.
  • Step 4:  Wetbrush cat again with Toast.  With color still in your brush, add Mustard and wetbrush highlights on cat.  With color still in your brush, add Flaxon Yellow and highlight cat further.  Shade fur in deepest areas with a wash of Leather Brown.
  • Step 5:  Paint mouth Christmas Red.  Paint teeth Bone.  Paint nose Black.
  • Step 6:  Shade cat and rocks with a Black wash.
  • Step 7:  Paint shield with two sections Turquoise (shade edges with Midnight Blue) and two sections Black.
  • Step 8:  Apply Mask-It on fired gold.  Let dry.
  • Step 9:  Spray piece with Matte Spray.  Remove Mask-It. Tape red plastic behind eyes.

DH2327  Dragon Firekeeper (in blue)   *  Note *  Apply Easy Clean (SP09) to fingertips before applying Fingertip Burnished Gold on piece.  Fingertip color will then wash off your fingers with just water, eliminating the need to clean hands with a solvent.  Materials and Colors Needed:  DH08 Black, DH27 Midnight Blue, DH29 White, DH40 Turquoise, FT04 Fingertip Burnished Gold, SP07 Krackle-It, SP09 Easy Clean, DHB6 - #12 shader, DHB3 - #3 round detail

  • Step 1:  Basecoat entire piece Black.
  • Step 2:  Apply one coat Krackle-It to front belly.  Let dry.  Apply one heavy coat Turquoise over Krackle-it.  Let dry.  Shade sides of belly and between ridges with a wash of Midnight Blue.
  • Step 3:  Apply Fingertip Burnished Gold to all flat, scale areas of piece, allowing the Black to remain showing in the crevices.
  • Step 4:  Wetbrush bumpy parts of skin and face with Midnight Blue lightened slightly with Turquoise.  Add a little more Turquoise to same brush and highlight these areas.  Corner-load your DHB6 #12 shader with Turquoise and float color around eye and beak edges to highlight further.  Shade these areas with a wash of Midnight Blue.
  • Step 5:  Wetbrush hair and raised scales with Midnight Blue lightened slightly with White. Lighten ends of hair again with White.  Float Turquoise on edges of each raised scale.
  • Step 6:  Shade piece in deepest crevices with a Black wash to add depth.
  • Step 7:  Buff Fingertip Burnished Gold areas with a soft cloth to add more luster.

DH2327  Dragon Firekeeper  (in yellow) Materials and Colors Needed:  Various brushes, CG300 Clear Glaze, liquid bright gold, SP02 Mask-It, SP08 Matte Spray, DH09 Real Brown, DH10 Mustard, DH23 Bone, DH24 Terra Cotta, SP07 Krackle-It

  • Step 1:  Clean greenware and cut out eyes.  Fire to cone 03.  Clear glaze horns, teeth and ridge of nose and fire to cone 05.  Apply liquid bright gold to glazed areas and fire to cone 018.
  • Step 2:  Basecoat belly, each side of ridge of nose and large scales on front of body with Terra Cotta.  Brush on Krackle-It to these areas and allow to dry.  Apply Mustard to krackled areas.  Basecoat rest of dragon Real Brown.  Wetbrush over Real Brown with Bone.  Shade and define entire piece with Terra Cotta.
  • Step 3:  Apply Mask-It to gold and then spray with Matte Spray.   Insert tea light candle.  Remove Mask-It.

DH2311  Driftwood Fighting Dragons Materials and Colors Needed:  Liquid fired gold, CG300 Clear Glaze,DH06 Lavender, DH08 Black, DH09 Real Brown, DH13 Petal Pink, DH15 Mystic Purple, DH22 Christmas Red, DH25 Toast, DH27 Midnight Blue, DH30 Country Blue, DH36 Navy Blue, DH37 Cream, DH52 Cranberry, SP08 Matte Spray

  • Step 1:  Clean greenware and fire to cone 03.
  • Step 2:  Basecoat piece Black.
  • Step 3:  Wetbrush wood Real Brown and apply washes of Toast, Country Blue.  Shade with Black.
  • Step 4:  Wetbrush first dragon Cranberry,  highlight with Mystic Purple, highlight with Lavender.  Add increasing amounts of Lavender to same brush and highlight dragon (tips of wings, feet, knees and face.)  Wetbrush belly Lavender.
  • Step 5:  Wetbrush second dragon Navy Blue and highlight with Petal Pink.  Highlight tips of wings, feet, knees and face with same brush.  Wetbrush belly Lavender.  Shade with Midnight Blue.
  • Step 6:  Paint teeth Cream, tongue Christmas Red, eyes Lavender with Mystic Purple iris.
  • Step 7:  Spray with Matte Spray.

DH2313  Driftwood Dragon in Lair Materials and Colors Needed:  Soft cloth, DH08 Black, DH12 Leather Brown, DH13 Petal Pink, DH15 Mystic Purple, DH16 Flaxon Yellow, DH18 Medium Brown, DH19 Light Grey, DH22 Christmas Red, DH25 Toast, DH27 Midnight Blue, DH30 Country Blue, DH37 Cream, DH49 Premier Gold, AT01 Black Antiquing, SP08 Matte Spray

  • Step 1:  Clean greenware and fire to cone 03.
  • Step 2:  Basecoat all piece Black.
  • Step 3:  Wetbrush wood Medium Brown.  Add washes of Toast, Light Grey, Country Blue.  Wetbrush Flaxon Yellow to old parts of wood and highlight with Cream.  Shade wood with Leather Brown and Black.
  • Step 4:  Antique wood with Black and wipe off with a soft cloth.  Wipe off more with solvent if needed.
  • Step 5:  Wetbrush dragon Mystic Purple and highlight with Petal Pink.  Add increasing amounts of Petal Pink and highlight dragon's wings, feet, knees and face.
  • Step 6:  Wetbrush dragons belly with Petal Pink and highlight with Cream.  Shade dragon with Midnight Blue.
  • Step 7:  Paint toenails and ridge on back Premier Gold.
  • Step 8:  Paint teeth Cream, tongue Christmas Red.  Paint eyes Petal Pink with Mystic Purple iris.
  • Step 9:  Spray with Matte Spray.

DH2328  Cobra and Skull Firekeeper Materials and Colors Needed:  DH01 Daffodil, DH02 Butter Cream, DH08 Black, DH09 Real Brown, DH12 Leather Brown, DH23 Bone, DH25 Toast, DH30 Country Blue, DH37 Cream, DH42 Dark Gray, SP05 Doc's Glue, SP07 Krackle-It, SP08 Matte Spray, red transparent plastic for eyes

  • Step 1:  Clean greenware and fire to cone 03.
  • Step 2:  Basecoat skull with Bone and apply one coat of Krackle It to skull and let dry.
  • Step 3:  Basecoat rock and cobra Black.  Wetbrush cobra Real Brown with washes of Toast and Country Blue.  Wetbrush belly with Daffodil and highlight with  Butter Cream.  Shade with Toast.  Shade with Black.
  • Step 4:  Wetbrush rock with Dark Gray and washes of Toast, Leather Brown, Teal and Country Blue and highlight with Cream.  Shade with Black.
  • Step 5:  Wetbrush skull with Cream and shade with Black.
  • Step 6:  Spray with Matte Spray.  Place red transparent plastic in eye sockets with Doc's glue.
