AFRICAN ANIMAL CHESS SET
MATERIALS NEEDED: Brushes (B3 round, B1 liner, B6 shader, B2 round), DH08 Black, DH09 Real Brown, DH10 Mustard, DH12 Leather Brown, DH14
Rose, DH16 Flaxon Yellow, DH18 Medium Brown, DH19 Light Grey, DH23 Bone, DH25 Toast, DH27 Midnight Blue, DH29 White, DH30 Country Blue, DH37 Cream, DH42 Dark Grey, DH45 Shadow Green, AT01 Black Antiquing Translucent, SP08 Matte
Spray WALLS:
Basecoat Black.
Step 2: Wetbrush water with Midnight Blue; highlight by gradually lightening blue with White.
Step 3: Wetbrush rocks and elephants with Light Grey. Shade and tint the rocks with washes of Toast, Leather Brown, Country Blue & Black. Lightly wetbrush rocks with Cream to highlight.
Lightly tint the elephants ears with a thin wash of Rose. Shade the elephants with a Black wash to define detail. Paint tusks Bone; shade base with a Toast wash.
Step 4: Wetbrush zebras with White; paint stripes Black.
Step 5: Wetbrush all remaining outside areas with Real Brown.
Step 6: Wetbrush lions with Mustard; highlight with Flaxon Yellow. Wetbrush Cream around muzzle. Tint fur slightly with a Toast wash and shade mane, face and body with a Black wash. Paint eyes
with Mustard background and Black pupils.
Step 7: Wetbrush hippos lightly with Dark Grey. Tint skin slightly with a Real Brown wash; shade with a Black wash.
Step 8: Wetbrush all grass and trees with Grass Green. With color still in your brush, add Mustard and highlight ground areas and edges of trees. Tint some of the grass with a Toast wash. Lightly
wetbrush Toast on brown background areas. Shade trees with a Shadow Green wash.
Step 9: Shade all walls with a Black wash (corner-loaded into B6 shader) as necessary to define detail.
ANIMALS:
Basecoat wood on "light side" Light Grey; antique with Black translucent. Wetbrush wood with Light
Grey. Shade and tint the wood with washes of Toast, Real Brown, Country Blue, and Black. Lightly highlight edges of wood with Cream.
Step 11: Basecoat all remaining pieces Black.
Step 12: Wetbrush wood on "dark side" with Real Brown. With color still in your brush, add Toast and wetbrush again. With same brush, add Cream and wetbrush highlights on wood. Tint
some of the wood with a Leather Brown wash. Shade wood with a Black wash to define detail.
Step 13: Elephants: same as directed for walls. Lions: same as directed for walls. Rhinos: same as directed for elephants, except add a light wash of Real Brown to darken around
face. Water Buffalo: wetbrush with Real brown. Lightly highlight with Medium Brown. Lighten horns with Dark Grey, then Cream. Shade with a Black wash. Cheetahs: wetbrush with Real
Brown. Wetbrush again with Mustard, then lighten with Flaxon Yellow. Wetbrush chest and muzzle with Cream. Tint deepest areas of fur slightly with a toast wash. Paint spots and paint facial markings
with a heavy Black wash.
Step 14: Spray all pieces and sides with Matte Spray sealer.
DRIFTWOOD LIONS - DH2342 MATERIALS AND COLORS NEEDED:
DH08 Black, DH09 Real Brown, DH12 Leather Brown, DH14 Rose, DH16 Flaxon Yellow, DH21 Sand, DH25 Toast, DH30 Country Blue, DH37 Cream, AT01 Black,
AT03 True Brown, SP08 Matte Spray
- Step 1:
Clean greenware and fire to cone 03.
- Step 2:
Basecoat lion and cubs Flaxon Yellow. Basecoat wood Black.
- Step 3:
Add washes of Real Brown, Toast, Country Blue, and Sand to wood. Wetbrush Cream to new wood.
- Step 4:
Antique lion and cubs with True Brown. Antique wood with Black. Wipe off with a soft cloth. Use solvent if needed to lighten piece.
- Step 5:
Wetbrush Flaxon Yellow on lion and cubs. Wetbrush Cream around face and under belly and chin. Shade around nose and ears with Real Brown and Black. Paint nose Rose and shade with Leather
Brown. Paint tongue rose and shade with Leather Brown. Paint iris' Black.
- Step 6:
Spray with Matte Spray.
DRIFTWOOD ELEPHANTS - DH2341 MATERIALS AND COLORS NEEDED:
DH08 Black, DH09 Real Brown, DH14 Rose, DH19 Light Grey, DH21 Sand, DH30 Country Blue, DH37 Cream, AT01 Black Antiquing Translucent, SP08 Matte
Spray Sealer
- Step 1:
Clean greenware and fire to cone 03.
- Step 2:
Basecoat elephant Light Grey and wood Black.
- Step 3:
Add washes of Real Brown, Toast, Country Blue, and Sand to wood. Wetbrush cream to new wood.
- Step 4:
Antique piece with Black. Wipe off with a soft cloth. (Use solvent if needed to lighten piece).
- Step 5:
Wetbrush elephant Light Grey. Add wash of Rose to ears and under trunk. Paint tusk Cream. Paint pupils Black.
- Step 6:
Spray piece with Matte Spray.
DRIFTWOOD GIRAFFE - DH2343 MATERIALS AND COLORS NEEDED:
DH08 Black, DH09 Real Brown, DH16 Flaxon Yellow, DH25 Toast, DH30 Country Blue, DH37 Cream, AT01 Black, AT04 Red Brown, SP08 Matte Spray Sealer
- Step 1:
Clean greenware and fire to cone 03.
- Step 2:
Basecoat giraffe Flaxon Yellow and wood Black.
- Step 3:
Add washes of Real Brown, Toast, Country Blue and Sand to wood. Wetbrush Cream to new wood.
- Step 4:
Antique giraffe with Red Brown and wood Black. Wipe off with soft cloth. (Use solvent if needed to lighten piece.)
- Step 5:
Wetbrush giraffe Flaxon Yellow. Use Toast for spots and shade with Real Brown.
- Step 6:
Paint iris Black and shade horns Black.
- Step 7:
Spray with Matte Spray sealer.
ZEBRA PILLOW VASE - GR1012 MATERIALS AND COLORS NEEDED:
CG306 Perfect White, DG218 Black, DG215 Cocoa Brown
- Step 1:
Clean greenware and fire to cone 03.
- Step 2:
Sponge off bisque and check for stress cracks.
- Step 3:
Apply three coats of CG306 Perfect White to vase.
- Step 4:
Sketch pattern on vase. Use DG218 Black, 3 coats, to make zebra stripes.
- Step 5:
Shade DG215 Cocoa Brown to give depth around mane and ear area.
- Step 6:
Fire to cone 05.
ELEPHANT PEN AND INK VASE - DH1690
MATERIALS AND COLORS NEEDED: Rapidoliner .35, graphite transfer paper, design pattern, liquid fired gold, sea sponge, CG300 Clear Glaze, DH05
Purple, DH19 Light Grey, DH25 Toast, DH37 Cream, DH38 Grass Green, DH40 Turquoise, DH45 Shadow Green, DH49 Premier Gold, SP02 Mask-It, SP08 Matte Spray Sealer
- Step 1:
Clean greenware and fire to cone 03. Apply two coats of Clear Glaze to bands and fire to cone 05. Apply one coat of liquid fired gold to glaze areas and fire to cone 018.
- Step 2:
Use sea wood sponge and double load with Turquoise and Shadow Green and pounce on piece. With dirty sponge add Premier Gold to color. Basecoat insert with Cream.
- Step 3:
Use graphite transfer paper, trace design using a ball point pen. Press lightly when tracing pattern so it will not dig into basecoat.
- Step 4:
Using rapidoliner pen, ink over all your traced lines.
- Step 5:
Use detailed pattern as guide, free hand in the rest of design.
- Step 6:
Lightly spray pattern with Matte Spray.
- Step 7:
Apply color to design, color should be applied as a wash and be very transparent. Apply color as follows: Elephant- Light Grey, Tusk - Cream, Leaves - Grass Green, Shadow Green, Dirt - Toast,
Purple
- Step 8:
Go over any lines that may need to be darker with rapidoliner pen.
- Step 9:
Spray entire piece with Matte Spray. Apply Mask-It to exposed glaze on rim before you spray.
DRIFTWOOD ELEPHANT - DH1830 DOC HOLLIDAY MATERIALS AND COLORS NEEDED
: DH08 Black, DH42 Dark Grey, DH19 Light Grey, DH37 Cream, DH14 Rose, DH25 Toast, DH09 Real Brown, DH12 Leather Brown, DH33 Deep Beige, DH30
Country Blue, AT01 Black Antiquing Translucent
- Step 1:
Basecoat entire piece Dark Grey. Antique with Black Translucent.
- Step 2
: Wet-brush elephant with Dark Grey. Add Light Grey to same brush and wet-brush again, highlighting lighter areas with Cream. Lightly tint ears and mouth with a Rose wash.
- Step 3:
Shade crevices with a Black wash.
- Step 4
: Wet-brush wood with Deep Beige. Shade and tint wood with washes of Toast, Real Brown, Leather Brown, Country Blue, and Black. Highlight wood by wet-brushing edges with Cream.
- Step 5
: Spray with Matte Spray Sealer.
