IMD-654/7 Painting Technique

Grecian chess set

Note: Fired Silver and Gold may be used to enhance the finished look of the chess set. Follow manufacturer's directions for applying this product.

Sides:

  • Base-coat pillars, trim under roof, and plain area under center roof with Cream.
  • Antique base-coated areas with Red Brown translucent stain. Wipe away excess color with a cloth dampened with solvent, leaving the color in the recessed areas.
  • Base-coat all remaining areas with Black.
  • Wet-brush the stones and steps with Light Grey. Tint them lightly with washes of Mauve and Blue Suede. Lightly highlight them with Cream. Shade around the pillars and between each step with a Black wash.
  • Wet-brush roof shingles with Blue Suede. Shade near upper edges of shingles with a wash of Teal. Paint lines across shingles with Black. Paint scalloped trim under plain rooftop with Teal.
  • Paint base and top of each pillar, and trim under shingles with Mauve.
  • Apply Finger Tip Gold to rooftop edge and plain rooftop.

Board:

  • Base-coat alternate squares of board with Cream. Antique these squares with Red Brown translucent.
  • Base-coat remaining squares, edges and back with Black

Mauve side pieces:

  • Base-coat "stone" areas on pieces (including the castle pillar) with Deep Beige. Pounce and blend Mauve, Cream and Deep Beige over these areas to create a mottled, marble effect.
  • Base-coat skin, clothing and horses with Cream. Basecoat hair with Buttercream.
  • Antique the basecoated areas with Red Brown translucent. Wipe away excess color with a cloth dampened with solvent.
  • Wet brush the hair with Buttercream, lightened with a little Cream. Shade recessed areas of hair with a Toast wash.
  • Paint eyes with Country Blue iris', Black pupils and lashes. Paint lips with a thin wash of Leather Brown. Paint eyebrows Toast.
  • Paint bases of pieces and trim on clothing with Mauve. Apply a thin wash of Cranberry over the Mauve, letting it collect in the crevices.
  • Paint horses' manes and plumes on bishops' helmets with Premier Gold.
  • Blue side pieces:
  • Base-coat "stone" areas on pieces (including the castle pillar) with Light Grey. Pounce and blend Blue Suede, Light Grey and Cream over these areas to create a mottled, marble effect.
  • Basecoat skin, clothing and horses with Light Grey.Basecoat hair with Toast. Antique skin with Red Brown translucent. Apply a thin wash of Real Brown on hair.
  • Antique the "marble area" of base, clothing and horses with Black translucent. Wipe away excess stain with a cloth dampened with solvent.
  • Wetbrush the hair with Toast, lightened slightly with Mustard. Shade recessed areas of hair with a Real Brown wash.
  • Paint eyes with Toast iris', Black pupils and lashes. Paint lips with a thin wash of leather Brown. Paint eyebrows Real Brown.
  • Paint bases of pieces and trim on clothing with Blue Suede. Apply a thin wash of Teal over the Blue Suede, letting it collect in the crevices.
  • Paint horses' manes and plumes on bishops' helmets with Silver.
